“MassBio has been at the table with Mayor Wu and the City of Boston throughout the year to express our deep reservations about increasing the cost of doing business in the City at a time when construction expenses have never been higher, demand for lab space is down from record levels, and the City already has some of the most expensive rents for life sciences space in the country. When costs like this go up, rents go up. That being said, we also recognize that the long-term competitiveness of the Massachusetts economy depends on the affordability and availability of housing, and a strong and diverse workforce pipeline. We will continue to work with the Wu administration to find the right balance between these competing priorities while partnering to advance a life sciences sector that not only delivers for patients and regional economic development, but also boasts a biotech workforce that better represents the neighborhoods around it.”
